Insuring valuable items

Shipment insurance is regulated, requiring a contract that must be both read and signed. Either physically or electronically. It is frequently offered at the drop-off desk by staff who have received light to no training. Meaning customers find themselves insuring an item without even knowing that this is something featured in the exclusions list. And that exclusions list is often really long: collectables, watches, art, jewellery, high-tech goods, computers, luxury clothing and all second-hand goods.

Items that are not brand new are valued at a greatly depreciated rate. And insurance payouts never match their most recent sale value. Dealers consequently find themselves out of pocket, as they are never awarded a payout in full when an item is lost or stolen.

Sending valuable: which insurance?

All carriers offer their own insurance coverage: DHL Express, Fedex, UPS, TNT, Royal Mail, DDP etc!

The rates charged are generally 1% of the item’s value, with a minimum rate somewhere in the region of £10.00.

The majority of their insurance schemes have terms and conditions that are tricky to find and even trickier to understand. From the numerous exclusions to the lack of information regarding payouts, customers are often lost. The procedures that need to be followed in order to obtain compensation can be pretty heavy going, and consumers often end up feeling like they are purchasing insurance for absolutely nothing.
